Mayor Frank G. Jackson, A.J. Petitti of Petitti Garden Centers, Ricky Smith of R.A.K.E. and MTD host the first “Planting with a Purpose”

CLEVELAND – Mayor Frank G. Jackson today was joined by A.J. Petitti of Petitti Garden Centers; Cleveland advocate, comedian and social media influencer Ricky Smith of Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere (R.A.K.E); and representatives from MTD Products for the first “Planting with a Purpose” event. People from across Northeast Ohio gathered at six City of Cleveland Parks to plant an estimated 4,000 flowering shrubs.

The day of planting began with a Kickoff Rally at Gordon Park and after a short ceremony the real work began. The six planting locations included:

Gordon Park: volunteers planted 2,000 Forsythia

Kirtland Park: volunteers planted 370 Hibiscus ‘Lucy’ and 240 Weigela ‘Sonic Bloom’

Humphrey Park: volunteers planted 130 Hibiscus ‘Chiffon Pink’, 130 Hibiscus ‘Chiffon Blue’, and 100 Hibiscus ‘Chiffon Blue’

Luke Easter Park & Zelma George Recreation Center: volunteers planted 50 Weigela ‘Sonic Bloom’; 200 Hibiscus ‘Minerva’, and 100 Weigela ‘Ghost’

Zone Recreation Center: volunteers planted a mix of 200 Hibiscus ‘Chiffon Blue’ and 200 ‘Chiffon Pink’

Gunning Recreation Center: volunteers planted 60 Hibiscus ‘Chiffon Blue’, 100 Hibiscus ‘Chiffon Blue’ and ‘Chiffon Pink’ mixed (50 of each),15 Hydrangea ‘Summer Snow’, 10 Weigela ‘Ghost’, 10 Hydrangea ‘Summer Snow’ , 10 Weigela ‘Sonic Bloom’, 10 Hibiscus ‘Lucy’, 10 Weigela ‘Sonic Bloom’.

The goal for this event was the beautification of the City of Cleveland in partnership with Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere (#RAKE), Petitti Garden Centers & MTD Products.
