2018 Mayor’s Food Basket Giveaway Feeds Thousands of Clevelanders in Need

Mayor Frank G. Jackson, city staff including members of his cabinet and other volunteers distributed holiday food at the annual Mayor’s Food Basket Giveaway event. The food baskets were assembled and distributed to thousands of Cleveland families in need at the Michael Zone Recreation Center, Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Zelma George Recreation Center. The Mayor’s Food Basket is generously supported by individuals, local businesses and City of Cleveland employees who raise funds and staff the event.

The City of Cleveland and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio are seeking qualified applicants to fill the remaining terms of appointment for two vacancies on the Cleveland Community Police Commission (CPC). The appointment period for the selected individuals would be through September 2019.

The City of Cleveland offers a Winter Safety Series on Facebook. In the latest episode, Cleveland Division of Fire Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Norman joined Captain Tyree Thompson at The Western Reserve Fire Museum and Education Center to show commonly overlooked dangers such as space heaters and old holiday lights.

The City of Cleveland is hiring! Many positions have been added thanks to Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s enhanced budget resulting from the passage of Issue 32.

Cleveland Animal Care & Control is the recipient of a $150,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. The grant has been earmarked to support the daily operations of Cleveland Animal Care & Control so they can continue placing pets in loving forever homes.Specifically, Cleveland Animal Care & Control’s shelter operations grant is designed to enhance the city’s new kennel.

The City of Cleveland's Division of Animal Care & Control is reducing adoption fees now through the end of the year. Adoption fees will be lowered from $61 to $21 in an effort to get more dogs in homes during the holiday season.

The Mayor's Office of Communications prepares and distributes information to Veterans and their supporters monthly, via the Cleveland City Hall blog. The page includes timely information on special events, memorials, healthcare, and other news of value to local veterans. 

Three of the top five most in-demand occupations are in software development and computer programming – yet  some low-income residents in Cleveland may not have the skills needed for the booming tech industry. A new collaboration between We Can Code IT and the City of Cleveland aims to change that by offering affordable training for residents who want to enter the lucrative tech field.

Cleveland is looking for new vendors to sell locally sourced and produced goods at the West Side Market's Arcade! The Arcade is the open air space that runs along the north and east sides of the building.

The City of Cleveland's Department of Public Health is offering free flu shots at the Thomas McCafferty and J. Glen Smith clinics. There is no charge for the shots which are available to all residents. 

The City of Cleveland’s Department of Public Utilities shared winter safety tips on everything from frozen pipes to clogged storm drains on the Winter Safety Series Facebook Live. Cleveland Public Power, Water Pollution Control and Cleveland Water gave viewers a wide range of tips to avoid holiday mishaps.

Sergeant Jennifer Ciaccia, Sergeant Charmin Leon and the Public Safety Recruitment team explored road safety, online shopping and more safety tips for Cleveland. The Winter Safety Series is a number of Facebook Live videos aimed at giving Clevelanders important information about how to be better prepared.

File of Life is an emergency preparedness magnetic file that promotes safety and peace of mind. It is designed to be placed on the outside of a refrigerator. It includes important information about medical history, emergency contacts, and medications- all in one place, for use in an emergency. This information is invaluable to EMS when seconds matter in an emergency. File of Life is available at no cost. This handy brochure provides eligibility and contact information for discounted payments for water, electric, sewer and gas as well as home weatherization.  In addition, energy saving tips are listed, and a number of assistance programs are detailed.

The Senior Safety and Resource Guide was prepared by the Division of Police Bureau of Community Policing and the Cleveland Department of Aging. It can be viewed online or mailed to interested residents who call 216.664.2833. The pulblication is available in English and also in Traditional Chinese.
