Energy Star Requirement for Tax Abated Homes in Cleveland
Pursuant to Ordinance No. 856-07, passed May 21, 2007, as of January 1, 2010, all tax-exempt homes in Cleveland must demonstrate that new construction or remodeling meets Energy Star standards Energy Star Certification, LEED Certification or Enterprise Green Community Standards in order to receive tax abatement.
LEED-ND
Cleveland is a leader in the nation with three neighborhoods striving to meet the LEED-ND (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Developments) standards.
Collinwood Recreation Center
In May 2010, The City of Cleveland broke ground on the New Collinwood Recreation Center. The facility was designed by City Architecture and is being constructed by Panzica Construction. It is being built to LEED Gold Certificaitn standards and will feature green elements such as solar thermal and PV systems, stormwater management practices and other sustainable building features. This project is being built to high green building standards without going over budget.
Downtown Bike Station
The City of Cleveland has approved a contract to the Envirocom Construction Company, Inc. to build the Downtown Bike Station at the Gateway Complex with Silver certification. -more

Capital Improvement Projects
The City of Cleveland requires LEED-AP professional involvement and at least 50% construction and demolition waste diversion for all City-funded capital improvement projects. Cleveland is striving to incorporate green building in all of its capital projects. Most recently, the Division of Water registered a maintenance and training facility to be LEED certified.
LEED-Neighborhood Development Pilot Program

The City is facilitating the construction and certification of three projects, which are currently seeking certification under the pilot LEED for Neighborhood Development program. Cleveland has the second highest number of LEED-ND pilot projects per capita in the nation, behind only Los Angeles, according to the environmental news organization Grist.
Green Training and Certification
The City of Cleveland is training City employees involved in permitting and capital improvements to become LEED –Accredited Professionals with the U.S. Green Building Council. Cleveland is continuing to educate City employees on green building and sustainable development through a variety of efforts.
