Public Works

The Department of Public Works directs and controls eight divisions: Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Parking, Park Maintenance, Property Management, Recreation, Streets, Traffic Engineering, and Waste collection and oversees the Public Auditorium, West Side Market, Cleveland Browns stadium, on-street parking, and all City owned off-street parking facilities.

  • Trash Pick-up Delayed for President's Day Holiday

    The City of Cleveland Department of Public Works will not pick up waste Monday, February 19th due to the President's Day holiday. There will be a one day delay in the waste collection schedule - trash will be collected Tuesday, February 20th through Saturday, February 24th. Regularly scheduled trash pick-up will resume on Monday, February 26th. Questions regarding collection can be directed to the Division of Waste Collection at 216.664.3711.

  • Glenville Recreation Center Youth Participate in MLK Speech Renactment

    Glenville Recreation Center youth participated in the Cleveland CAVS celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the CAVS vs. Warriors game on January 14, 2018. Forty youth and parents from the rec center were chartered to the Q Arena where they enjoyed the game and participated courtside to watch a reenactment of a speech Dr. King gave at Glenville High School in 1967.

  • Recreation Centers Offering Lifeguard Training Classes

    Clevelanders 15 years and older can become professional American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards. Successful completion of the course does not guarantee employment with the City of Cleveland. Training classes and review courses run through May, 2018.

  • Bike Rack Service Available Downtown on East 4th

    The service comes complete with parking spaces, personal lockers, and changing/shower facilities at 2148 East 4th. Those needing more information may call 216.771.7120.

  • Parade Permit Applications

    Any person or entity planning to hold a parade on the streets of Cleveland must obtain a permit as required by Cleveland Codified Ordinance § 411.05 by completing an application and filing it with the Office of Special Events & Marketing.

  • Monthly Keycard Payments for City Parking Lots Can Now be Done Online

    Monthly Keycard payments can be paid online for parking at the Gateway East Garage, Lakefront Municipal Parking, and Willard Park Garage. There is a convenience fee associated. 

  • League Park's Baseball Heritage Museum Gift Shop Offers Cleveland Baseball Souvenirs

    Professional Cleveland sports teams had their start at historic League Park. It's now home to the Baseball Heritage Museum, which offers keepsakes including mugs, t-shirts, baseballs, and League Park History DVD's, all at reasonable prices.

  • Mass Notification System Provides Critical Information to Clevelanders, Visitors

    The City of Cleveland has announced the launch of a mass notification system that will provide critical emergency and non-emergency alerts to residents and visitors. The City encourages all residents, visitors, and businesses to sign up for the system known as CodeRED.

  • City Recreation Volunteer Openings Available Year-Round

    The Division of Recreation is seeking volunteers. Recreation center volunteers enrich the community in several areas including the arts, sports, education, and mentoring. These generous individuals are from diverse backgrounds and include people of all ages from recent graduates seeking practical experience, to retirees with spare time to share. 

About the Department of Public Works

The recent consolidation of the former departments of Public Service and Parks, Recreation & Properties in order to form the Department of Public Works improves service, efficiency, and reduces redundancy through the sharing of equipment and personnel.

This is the City’s 3rd largest department with over 1,100 dedicated employees serving Cleveland.

Public Works is responsible for core services. Annually the department picks up approximately 156,000 tons of waste, uses 70,000 tons of salt for snow, paints over 7,000 crosswalks, and provides over 49,000 vacant property service visits. The department also maintains city parks and parking lots, and provides leisure opportunities to residents.

The department's goals are threefold:

  • Provide consistent, quality service; maintain clean neighborhoods and safe streets and sidewalks for pedestrians, motorists, and visitors.
  • Use a sustainable and proactive approach to provide services and recreational activities in order to maintain quality of life for Cleveland residents and visitors.
  • Operate and maintain clean, accessible, vibrant public space for exploration, relaxation, and exercise, while connecting culturally diverse venues of sports, entertainment, and educational experiences.
